The House that Chief Built

A week or so ago, I stopped in at the little cottage that Mary and Nick built. My outlaws are something else. Seriously, if anyone in Nick's family gets an idea, it's as good as done. So.. a few years ago, they thought it would be fun to have a little cottage out at the farm, to use as a getaway. Mary had the "vision" so Chief started drawing up the plans. Mary spends most her time out there with the horses, so it would be a little practical as well. So here's the finished product. Pretty much everything they used is recycled from somewhere or from wood they milled right there at the farm. Windows from a neighbors torn down house, leftover siding from their daughters house, I really meant it when I said they take everybody's castaways and usually put 'em to good use. Anyway, after horseback riding I decided to snap a few pics, cause it's quite an idyllic little scene out there.

Mary's an avid gardener and cooks constantly with fresh herbs.

Gigantified Seneca Stone chimney. It's the same red rock they used for the Smithsonians in DC. There's loads and loads of it in the ground out there.

Vegetable and herb garden.

Chamomile flowers for eyes.

View from the loft inside. There's enough room for a big bed and lots of fluffy pillows. They say sleeping up there with rain against the tin roof is heavenly. I believe it; I love that sound.

How to hang a chandelier--Chief-style!
This old pulley should do it...
"lower to light, and raise it to shine."

Breakfast in the flower garden.

Junk, more junk. Call it an antique and it's pure country charm.

Mere steps away from the horsies. Ahhh...horse people!

Simply tuckered.

Wow, I am simply blown away! What a dream get away that when I close my eyes, I could totally see myself out there for months, very content! Beautiful and breathtaking!! Pictures felt like right out of a magazine. I was also drooling over the greenery. We received our first snow storm this weekend and the East Coast was looking really nice! -Suzanne

OOhhh Jen.. The windows, the stone chimney, the arbor, the little patio furniture out alone in the green... I so LOVE this darling Country getaway.. What a lovely & Quaint place. Just the look of it is inviting.. I love homes like this that look like "simplicity"..

It seems like a dreamy place for a getaway. Love that it all came from recycled places, and just from the picture you can tell it's a "Gathering place" I love the charm!
Thanks for sharing...

Beautiful! I'm jealous too, but I think what I really admire is how hard working Chief and Mary are. They don't have this stuff just because they are cool, they have it because they work their butts off. So, more power to them. They deserve every minute of peace and solace they get out of that little place, I just hope they make the time to have those moments!

It's been fun catching up on your blog! That is such a beautiful home. :)

OK, I LOVED reading about MHF. I have always heard about it, but never knew the history (and I DO remember reading that AOL article!) After reading this post, Ty got all pumped up to make a visit out there. So amazing, Jennifer!

(PS - I adore Erasure too. I'll fight that one to the death.)
